1. CHOOSE A TV MOUNT

2. CHECK YOUR WALL

a) The most important thing to consider when mounting a television is whether or not your wall can hold it up. Even the most modern, lightest televisions are quite a bit heavier than your painting of Aunt Trudy. Because of this, the location you choose will need a stud(s) to anchor the screws. You can find out if there are studs by using a stud finder.

Warning: drywall anchors won't work. Eventually, the anchors will get pulled through the drywall and your TV will fall on the floor.

b) If there are no studs at your desired location then try to choose another location that does have a stud or consider using a TV cart.

3. CHOOSE A PROPER MOUNTING LOCATION AND VIEWING HEIGHT

a) Make a template from a sheet of paper or cardboard of the approximate size of your TV and hang it on the wall at every possible location and choose the desired one.

b) Make sure it’s centered and the position is not too high that it strains your neck when you look at it at your regular sitting position.

c) Make sure the location has no severe glare that will disturb you from seeing the content on your TV screen, and that it has a good visibility from all sitting areas in the room.

Tip: For maximum viewing comfort, plan to mount your TV at a height on the wall that corresponds to the viewer’s eye level when seated — typically, with the center of the screen 40-45 inches off the floor.

Tip: Plan your cable management before the installation such as choose a location close to an electrical outlet. Measure the length of the TV’s power cord to be sure it will reach. Also do make sure that, if you intent to run some cables through your wall, that these are tested before installation as to make sure they work properly.

4. LOCATE THE STUDS

Warning: Again! DO NOT use wall anchors as they cannot support TV wall mounts.

a) Once you’ve picked an ideal location for the television, run the stud finder along the top of the paper.

b) Use a stud finder to locate two studs in your wall that will support your TV.

c) Mark the location of each stud’s center with a pencil. Use a nail to confirm a stud has been located correctly.

5. MARK PILOT HOLES

a) Mark the four corners of the TV on the wall and remove the DIY template.

b) Use a ruler to measure the distance between the top and bottom of the TV marks and locate the screws holes on the studs that you want to use to secure the mounting plate of your TV mount.

c) Use a level to ensure the mounting holes are level.

6. POSITION THE WALL MOUNT

a) Hold the wall mount up against the wall and aim it to the screw holes (pilot holes) you just marked on the studs and use a level again to make sure the mount is level.

b) Call a friend to help you hold the wall mount.

Tip: Remember the old adage, “mark twice, cut once.” That same rule applies to drilling in walls – check that the mounting holes are level twice before drilling.

7. DRILL THE HOLES

a) Use a power drill to drill pilot holes for the wall bracket screws or bolts.

b) Attach the wall bracket plate to the wall using the screws or bolts provided with the wall mount kit.

8. ATTACH MOUNT TO WALL

a) This is the easiest part – simply have a friend hold the mount against the wall where you’ve drilled the pilot holes and tighten the screws to attach.

b) Check again that it’s level once mounted.

9. ATTACH MOUNTING PLATE TO TV

a) If there’s a stand on the TV’s frame, unbolt and remove it.

b) Locate the mounting holes on the back of your TV. If necessary, pry off the plastic caps over the holes with a screwdriver.

c) Attach the mounting arms to the mounting holes on your TV, using the bolts provided with your mounting kit. Be careful not to over-tighten, and do not use a power drill. Make sure the two mounting brackets are level with each other.

d) Set the TV aside. Be sure to rest the TV so the screen is facing upward. Setting the TV with the screen facing down can cause permanent damage.

Tip: If you’re attaching your TV to a fixed wall mount, you may find it easier to connect the cables to the television before attaching it to the wall bracket, as detailed below.

e) Be sure the TV and any attached devices are unplugged.

f) Have someone help you hold the television up to the wall mount. Attach the audio and video cables to the television per the manufacturer’s instructions.

10. MOUNT TV TO WALL

Safety: Do not attempt this alone. Have one person interlock the brackets while one or two others lift the TV.
a) Lock the TV mounting arms onto the wall bracket plate. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure the connections.

b) Confirm that every
point of connection is locked down securely. Test your installation with a few light tugs.

c) Test and troubleshoot connections and TV functions to be sure they all work.

d) Make adjustments as necessary. Be sure to get help if you need to remove the TV from the wall.
